The Nature of Inquiry

How do academics, professionals, and creatives make decisions and answer difficult questions? Why do we employ different methods of analysis? What does our work contribute to a fruitful future? Researchers operate as perpetual students of their crafts, addressing these inquiries every day.

THE NATURE OF INQUIRY

This survey course of research design methods invites students into the research world with directions for pursuing careers in a wide range of careers and professions. This class covers the academic writing process from idea formation → proof of concept → data collection → data analysis → data distribution. It also emphasizes the cultivation of one’s unique writing style and voice.

By the end of this course, students are able to:
A. Articulate your research goals clearly and persuasively
B. Identify ethical practices, critical theories, and methods is social science research
C. Differentiate between qualitative, quantitative, CBPR, mixed methods, and arts-based research
designs
D. Create a research proposal for your course of study
E. Communicate your course of study with faculty, colleagues, and participants
F. Identify your positionality via a reflexive activity
G. Develop critical reading and thinking skills in research
H. Advance your proposed course of study
I. Build a collaborative community of scholars in your area of interest.
